Simple DIY Playdough Recipe

Kids of all ages love play dough (some adults too) and it is incredibly easy to make at home with non-toxic ingredients.

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups Flour
  • 3/4 cup salt (any type)
  • 4 tsp cream of tartar
  • 2 Tbsp Oil (olive oil, avocado oil or whatever you have on hand)
  • 2 cups Boiling Water

Direction:

Combine all of the dry ingredients in a mixing bowl, then add in the oil. Pour in your boiling water and mix well to fully incorporate all the ingredients. It will be very hot at first, so wait till it cools down to give it to your kids.

Store in an airtight container or ziplock bag. it will last for quite a while due to the salt in it, but with anything containing water always check for signs of spoilage before giving it to your kids.

Natural ways to color the play dough (1-2 tsp):

  • Cocoa Powder
  • Cinnamon Powder
  • Instant Coffee Powder
  • Matcha Powder
  • Spirulina
  • Turmeric Powder
  • Beet Root Powder
  • Hibiscus Powder or Tea
  • Hibiscus and a pinch of baking soda = purple
  • Red Cabbage Leaf (add to hot water first to infuse it with the color)
  • Red Cabbage Leaf and a pinch of baking soda (add to hot water first to infuse it with the color) = purple or blue

Add it to your dry ingredients or steep it in hot water before adding it to the dry ingredients. You can also divide the playdough up and knead in the color powder.

NOTES:

  • Any type of salt will work, but I find depending on the type of salt you use you may have to add more flour or water. With Sea Salt, I usually need to add more flour and with Himalayan Salt, I usually have to add more water. Although I would never recommend Table salt for consumption it is an inexpensive way to go for making playdough. I haven’t used table salt for playdough in a couple of years, so I will make an update about that here the next time I use it to make playdough.
  • If you are using coarse salt, I would recommend dissolving it in the 2 cups of boiling water first to make for smoother playdough.
